Thieme &amp; Cie, Zutphen&nbsp; De Gesuikerde Onderneming 2023 – lopend In 1972 verlieten de Javaanse grootouders van Sebastian en Tyler Koudijzer hun geboorteland Suriname. Meer dan vijftig jaar later namen de broers Koudijzer hun grootouders mee terug om belangrijke locaties uit de familiegeschiedenis op te zoeken, zoals de plek waar oma Watinie opgroeide, of de kerk waar zij en opa Iksan tot christen werden gedoopt. Samen reisden ze terug naar Colakreek, waar in de jaren zestig het eerste afspraakje van de grootouders plaatsvond en waar ze jaren later ook trouwden. Ook bezocht de familie de verlaten raffinaderij van suikeronderneming Mariënburg, waar Iksan ooit werkte als opzichter. Het bedrijf werd kort na de onafhankelijkheid van Suriname in 1975 gesloten; de plek is nu overwoekerd door bomen en planten. De Gesuikerde Onderneming zoomt in op plekken waar particuliere verhalen zich verstrengelen met narratieven over een koloniaal verleden. De grootouders van de kunstenaars zijn zelf directe nakomelingen van contractarbeiders, en de reizen van de familie over de wereld – in dit geval van Java naar Suriname naar Nederland – kregen vorm door bredere koloniale contexten. Onder koloniaal bestuur werd het dagelijks leven voor veel burgers – of ze naar school, werk of de kerk gingen – gekarakteriseerd door een geërfde disbalans in macht. Naast het opnieuw bezoeken van fysieke ruimtes en locaties, onderzoekt het project ook fotografisch territorium zoals private familiearchieven of officiële documenten in de kast van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde. De beelden die samen De Gesuikerde Onderneming vormen, representeren een archief-onder-constructie en een poging om elementen van een ontwrichte geschiedenis bij elkaar te puzzelen. Deze tekst is geschreven naar aanleiding van de expositie Grounding – Stories of Migration, FOTODOK x BredaPhoto Festival 2024, gecureerd door Daria Tuminas. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; The Sugarcoated Venture 2023 – ongoing In 1972, Sebastian and Tyler Koudijzer’s Javanese grandparents left their country of birth: Suriname. More than 50 years on, the Koudijzer brothers took their grandparents back, seeking out important sites of memory – like the place where Grandma Watinie grew up, or the church where she and Grandpa Iksan were baptised into Christianity. Together, they journeyed to Cola Creek, where the grandparents’ first date took place in the 1960s, and where they got married years later. The family also visited the abandoned refinery of the Mariënburg Sugar Company, where Iksan once came to work as an overseer. Now overgrown by trees and plants, the site was closed shortly after Suriname gained independence in 1975. The Sugarcoated Venture hones in on spaces where private stories intertwine with narratives of a colonial past. The artists’ grandparents are themselves the direct descendants of indentured labourers, whilst their familial movements across the world – in this case, from Java to Suriname to the Netherlands – were shaped by broader colonial contexts. Under colonial rule, daily life for many citizens – whether going to school, work or church – was characterised by innate imbalances of power. As well as revisiting physical spaces and locations, the project also examines photographic territory – be it private family archives, or the official records that sit on the shelves of the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies. The images that make up The Sugarcoated Venture represent an archive under construction, and an attempt to puzzle together elements of a dislocated history. I was always fascinated about the dagger on the wall at my grandparents’ place. There was something mysterious about it, something dark. If I would look at it long enough, the snake on the handle would stare back at me all evening. It was said that the dagger could be alive. When I visited my grandparents a few years ago, we spoke about the past in relation to the Javanese culture. When talking about batik fabrics, my grandfather jumped out of his chair and started changing upstairs. In his Javanese outfit he came down and asked me to take a picture. “Wait!” Grandpa, said suddenly. He quickly went back upstairs and came back with the blade. I asked him, “What is that thing?” To which he responded, “the Keris”. The Keris started to interest me more and more. A year later I asked my grandfather if I could photograph the object again. To my surprise, my grandfather said he threw it away. “Why?!” I wondered. He told me that the church leader had said that the keris is not compatible with the Christian faith. Not even as a decoration, it could possibly have dark powers. In disbelief I asked him, “But where did you throw it away?” “Roteb!*” He answered quickly. *Roteb is a waste processing company. <img width="3461" height="4615" width_o="3461" height_o="4615" keris on the advice of the church leader, because he was told that Christianity could not go together with this Javanese mystic blade. Therefore I decided to find a keris myself. During my search, I meet a dukun, a traditional Javanese healer. From the very first moment, this feels like home. Many objects and symbolism that I come across in this place gives me a feeling of nostalgia, originating from my childhood. As a child, I spent half of my time with my Javanese grandparents. They took me along to all kinds of celebrations of family and friends. In this way, the Javanese culture was always a reality for me, something that is slowly disappearing around me in last few years. When I ask my mother why her generation is not that interested in their Javanese roots, I got the answer: Probably because that history is not so beautiful. Therefore I choose to tell a story which focuses on my search for community and belonging. I want to rediscover an abandoned heritage in hopes to connect with my sacred past. It is a story I actually want to tell the next generation, without all the tragedy and suffering. In de zomer brengen ze een groot gedeelte van hun vrije tijd door met hun gepensioneerde grootouders in de tuingemeenschap de Beukhoeve in Rotterdam. De laatste jaren heeft hier als het ware een nieuwe kampong gevormd. Zoals opa het beschrijft is dat een wijk maar dan op zijn Javaans met hutjes en tuintjes, waar iedereen elkaar bezoekt, zonder afspraak, met lekker eten, met een deel van oogst en zaadjes om te planten. Om oma’s kookkunsten in ere te houden, gaan de broers samen met haar koken. Met een liefdevolle nieuwsgierigheid vragen zij naar het ontstaan van de gerechten die zij maakt. De nostalgische werking van geur en smaak roept vele herinneringen op en stukje voor stukje onthullen deze gerechten een geschiedenis waar eerder nauwelijks over werd gepraat. Tijdens het koken wordt de geschiedenis behapbaar. Tijdens het eten, zijn we trots. Dit is het onderste uit de pan herboren. In the archives of my grandfather &amp; grandmother, I found material from the first year in the Netherlands on damaged DVDs. The film 'A day out of 1000 dreams' is set in 1972/'73 and shows the migration and several 'first times' ; such as the first time to the zoo, to school, to the fair and the vacation to Paris. When I first saw the material, I was astonished at the joy and zest for life I saw my family experiencing. This is in fact in stark contrast to Dutch public archives, which are full of Javanese people but rarely depicted in their strength. With that, I want to emphasize the importance of proper representation and having role models.
